District Annual Conferences

By Eddi Rodney

As part of the political organisation and assignment of sub-regional responsibilities the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) through its local unit structure, (i.e. the party Regions identified in terms of the national county geography) recently has proceeded to have District Conferences.
These essentially commenced as from March 3 2017, and were held in Regions (3), Four (4), Five (5) and Six (6), or Demerara (West and East), as well as Berbice (West and East).
An estimated 18 of these events have been already held involving 130 part groups.

New Leadership Stream
As traditional, District Conferences and organized in keeping with the PPP Constitution and to be convenient in terms of not clashing with national holidays, or other major dates or community programmes (e.g. religious observations etc.).

For the most part, these conferences provide an opportunity for the participation of new members into the party, and a total 550 Delegates were registered as actively engaged. Out of these 154 (one hundred and fifty four) new leaders or committee serving officials were identified for various responsibilities.

Most of the active groups would be so structured to include a batch of secretaries, including those for Education (Party), Organising, Finance and of course the chairperson. Amongst the various venues for these Regional Conference preparatory events were villages or neighbourhood centers as well as others including PPP regional offices. Approximately twenty three (23) more District local unit conferences are still to be held in various subregions.

Sunday District Conference
Sunday March 19th will be the occasion of Annual District Conference for the Georgetown area. The keynote event will be held at Freedom House. Registration is scheduled to commence at 9:30 hours. Party members whose cards would have been submitted for renewal are advised that these cards would be in safe keeping at Freedom House.
Amongst the issues expected to be discussed would be the ongoing parking meters scam as well as the serious escalation in armed robberies targeting citizens and communities perceived as supporters of the PPP.

Region Five Annual Conference
All the District conferences programmed for Region Five (West Berbice) have been successful. On Sunday March 19 this sub-region will host its regional event at Bath PPP office. One hundred and fifty delegates and observers are registered to participate.

Babu John -2017
Not since the massive gathering of Guyanese- mainly members and supporters of the PPP- who attended the 1997 Babu John tribute and rally after the death of Dr. Cheddi Jagan has there been a similar tribute in terms of thousands who attended.

The March 5, 2017, event that featured a tribute consisting of address and messages and a wreath laying ceremony was estimated as being the largest in terms of masses of People since 1997.

Party Leaders – General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jadgeo, Donald Ramotar, as well as Executive Secretary, Zulfikar Mustapha and Hydar Ally delivered addresses. Hydar Ally on behalf of the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre. Sheila Veersammy M.P, also contributed appropriately on behalf of the Women’s Progressive Organistion (WPO), Mr David Armogan. Regional (RCD) Chairman, was also amongst the speakers as well as former Prime Minister Samuel Hinds.

Wreath Laying
According to reports in sections of the local mainstream, (SN March 6, 2017 as well as Guyana Times March 7, 2017) the consensus that emerged from Babu John 2017, was that “The people are looking to the PPP for leadership”, as for one the APNU- AFC has failed them.

During the wreath laying segment of the programme a memorial tribute was made by the senior Envoy of the People’s Republic of China, other wreaths were lid by the traditional representatives.
